Property expert Philip Holford has raised more than £6,300 for four charities by undertaking a 484-mile cycle challenge in the mountains of the French Pyrenees.

Myddelton & Major Partner Phil Holford took on his biggest challenge to date by riding from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean coast, climbing 67,432 ft in the process.

The Salisbury-based chartered surveyor spent seven days completing his first individual challenge – and endured three days of monsoon conditions as driving rain and hailstorms tested his endurance.

Keen mountain biker Philip is raising cash for Cancer Research UK, British Heart Foundation, the Alzheimers Society and the Stars Appeal for the Salisbury District Hospital’s second MRI scanner.

He said: “The organisers described the challenge as ‘hard-core’ and they were not joking. However, three days of monsoon rain was not on their agenda so the cycling conditions tested everyone’s resolve to their limits over the course of the week.

“I am aware that as a ‘big unit’ of 105kg cycling up mountains doesn’t come naturally but I was up for a challenge and trained hard, including the Brecons, Jurassic Beast and SAMS100 rides.

“I am very grateful for all the generous donations and incredible support I have received for these great causes and rest assured it provided me with all the motivation and inspiration I needed when pushing myself to the top of each climb.”

Phil – who advises Myddelton & Major clients on commercial property – started his epic ride in Biarritz and conquered some famous Tour de France climbs among 12 major ascents with average gradients of between five and 10 per cent over distances of up to 19 km.

Ascents included the Col d’Aubisque, Col du Tourmalet, Col d’Aspin, Col de Peyresourde and Port de Pailheres, before Philip, who took up charity road cycling to celebrate his 50th birthday in 2016, reached the finish line at Quillan, near Perpignan.

Philip was taking part in the Route des Grande Pyrenees event – featuring tiny rural, scenic roads and bucket list climbs – organised by Fordingbridge-based Challenge Adventure Charities.

The company has organised events – mainly cycling in Europe – 20 years and raised £4.2 million for cancer and medical charities in the process with every penny raised paid to charity because participants pay the full cost of event entry themselves.

Philip’s Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/philip-holford4 is still open or alternatively send a cheque made payable to “Challenge Adventure Charities” to him at Myddelton and Major, 49 High Street, Salisbury, SP1 2PD, marked for his attention.
