Hamptworth Golf and Country Club’s newly-launched restaurant and café-bar got off to a flying start when a collection of raptors swooped in for a visit.

Hundreds of children took the opportunity to visit the opening of ‘Barny’s’ during their school holidays.

South Wilts Falconry took along some owls and birds of prey and put on displays and entertained the crowds.

Despite Barny’s being named after a barn own it was the giant Eagle Owl that turned heads, with its six feet wing span and bright orange eyes.

Entrepreneur Carl Faulds, who bought the club a year ago, is creating a family-friendly atmosphere and encouraging non-golfers to make use of the facilities for morning coffee, lunches, dinners and functions.

Set on the glorious Hamptworth estate between Southampton and Salisbury in the north of the New Forest, the golf course is famed for its Par 6 hole, The Beast.

But the country club also has a magnificent clubhouse as well as five international croquet lawns and a tennis section.

Carl said: “The opening was a terrific success; we had free teas, coffees, cakes and ice creams and a membership offer on offer which was popular.

“The weather was a great for us and the birds of prey really put on a show for the visitors.

“We have a family-friendly venue with sensibly-priced food and drink and we also host regular ‘Dine around the World’ evenings and live music acts.

“We are hoping for a good summer and welcoming all our new members and their families.”
