Hamptworth Golf and Country Club’s famous Par 6 golf hole measuring a scary 666 yards has been officially opened.
A new elevated tee box was built over the winter and club pros and members were keen to drive off from the summit to ‘Christen’ The Beast.
The championship course, between Southampton and Salisbury in the north of the New Forest, attracts golfers from far and wide who want to take on the famous 16th hole.
It is the only Par 6 at 666 yards in the world and a unique golfing experience with those who ‘Beat the Beast’ by making a birdie receiving an ‘I Beat the Beast’ certificate.
These certificates have already become highly sought-after souvenirs due to the attached bragging rights.
The 18-hole course can play up to 6,500 yards long and weaves through the trees on the sprawling Hamptworth estate.
Following a £250,000 investment in the last 12 months the course is receiving rave reviews from golfers.
Anyone can book a tee time online or through the Pro Shop and play a round taking on ‘The Beast’ then celebrate with a pint of Hamptworth’s specially commissioned unique ‘Beast Bitter’ in the recently refurbished bistro-bar, Barny’s.
The club’s owner, entrepreneur Carl Faulds, said: “Golfers love a challenge, so we extended the 16th hole last year to make it a Par 6 and now we’ve elevated the new tee box and launched it officially.
“Our members love it, as do societies – and visitors come many miles to take it on.
“It is a fair hole, not just relying on brute strength; the first shot is to a quite generous fairway, allowing golfers to try and get as much distance as possible.
“But then they need to use their brain as well as brawn to zig-zag their way to the green through some trees before they get to the green set in an amphitheatre, avoiding the greenside bunker.
“The green also slopes, making it a tricky finish, but an incredibly satisfying one if you make a birdie.
“Hamptworth is a family-friendly club with a relaxed atmosphere and we also have a thriving tennis section and croquet club with five international standard lawns.”

Hamptworth Golf and Country Club is set in a beautiful location between Southampton and Salisbury in the New Forest.
