A Bournemouth primary school found a refreshing way of getting its new headteacher acquainted with the parents.

Chris Jackson started his new role as Head of Avonwood Primary in September and met pupils’ mums and dads at a specially arranged afternoon tea.

And it was a great way for Chris to share his strong vision for what is Bournemouth’s newest primary school.

He said: “I am incredibly proud to be joining such a fantastic school as Avonwood and this was a great way to meet all the parents.

“I think this is a really special place, with engaged parents, a dedicated team of staff and very happy children who are eager to learn and love coming to school.

“It already has wonderful foundations in place and I look forward to building on the success that’s already been created here.”

Chris, 33, joins Avonwood – which is part of Avonbourne Trust and was recently rated Good in its first Ofsted inspection – with a strong record in education leadership.

After gaining First Class Honours in Business Technology, Chris completed his PGCE in 2006.

In the 11 years he has been teaching Chris has held the positions of assistant headteacher, head of upper college, head of year, head of ICT and head of enterprise.

Most recently he was assistant headteacher at fellow Trust academy, Avonbourne College as well as being the Trust’s designated safeguarding lead.

And it is this secondary school experience which Chris feels will bring a real advantage to children at Avonwood.

He explained: “Avonwood is in quite a unique position in that being part of Avonbourne it is a genuinely all-through school where children can attend from three to 18.

“Already our children are benefitting from the specialist secondary teaching from the Trust academies and I’m looking forward to introducing other measures, such as a science club, that will stretch the children’s learning.

“As our school grows and we welcome Years 4, 5 and 6 children we will be really utilising the secondary school experts to help our pupils progress rapidly when they go up the levels.”

Avonwood Primary opened in 2014 and is growing with each year, currently it has children from Foundation to Year 3. It will be fully complemented with children from nursery to Year 6 by 2020.

Avonbourne Trust CEO, Debbie Godfrey-Phaure, said: “We are delighted to have Chris as Avonwood’s new headteacher.

“He is young, passionate about education and has very exciting ideas on how to take Avonwood even further.

“Chris is very ambitious for the school and its children and I’m sure under his leadership an outstanding future waits for all involved with Avonwood.”
