Dorset-based metal decking company SMD Ltd has celebrated a number of milestones during 2017.
The company, one of only a handful of British firms to design, manufacture and install its own steel decking systems, commemorated its 30th anniversary with a number of prestigious national award wins.
SMD, headquartered at Tower Park, Poole, was founded in Ringwood in 1987 and now employs more than 120 staff at locations across the UK, including Leeds, Nottingham and Glasgow – as well as a satellite office in Dubai and a design centre in India.
In the Construction Enquirer awards SMD was named Best Specialist Contractor to Work With (Under £25m) category and also awarded a top 10 spot in the Best Specialist Contractor to Work For (Under £25m) category.
There was also a triumph in the FASET (Fall Arrest Safety Equipment Training) Excellence of Work Award 2017 for SMD’s high standard of work and health and safety performance on the 40-storey Scalpel building in London, and a highly commended in the Health Safety Training Achievement award.
SMD won the Innovation Award in the 2017 Building Safety Group (BSG) Health & Safety Awards and was shortlisted in the Sub-contractor Award and Best Use of Technology Award.
SMD Development Director Dan Williams said: “We are delighted to have won so many awards in 2017, which is testament to both the skill and dedication of all my colleagues and the high standards we set ourselves.
“Our aim is to be the UK’s leading provider of structural floor and roof solutions to Britain’s competitive construction industry and we will certainly not be resting on our laurels as we strive to reach that goal.
“Despite the challenges faced this year by the construction industry as a whole, we have continued to hit targets and grow both turnover and market share. We look forward to 2018 with renewed optimism.”
SMD, known for shaping Britain’s skyline, also continued its expansion programme by signing a distribution agreement for its products in Cyprus, linking with Angastiniotes Bros Steel Limited on the Mediterranean island.
Another landmark came with the publication of Technical Director Jamie Turner’s White Book, a concept design guide that includes design look-up tables and detailed specifications for floor decking. It is available online as an interactive resource and in print format.
And Poole MP Robert Syms praised the firm while visiting the Tower Park HQ. He said: “It is great to see a specialist Poole company at the forefront of the UK’s manufacturing industry and playing a major role in the construction trade.”
On the charity front SMD staff took part in gruelling cycling and walking marathon challenges and raised £2,000 for Julia’s House, the children’s hospice in Corfe Mullen.
The firm’s steel decking has been used in such iconic buildings as the Shard, the Scalpel and the Olympic Park in London, Wimbledon Centre Court, Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, Cheltenham racecourse and terminals at Heathrow Airport.
