Couples going through divorce issues should put children first and try and resolve matters as amicably as possible, says a new recruit to Battens Solicitors’ family department.
Experienced family law specialist Lesley Powell has joined the 20,000-client firm as an associate based across its five offices, including its Yeovil headquarters.
Divorce issues
Lesley, who has worked extensively in family law for 15 years, deals particularly with divorce and separation, children issues and domestic violence issues, including emergency injunctions.
She said: “Separating couples should try and resolve the issues between themselves as amicably as possible, particularly where there are children.
“My role is to take a collaborative approach when dealing with divorce matters in order to assist and support clients through what is always an extremely difficult time.”
Lesley is a member of the Law Society’s Family Law Panel and also Resolution, an organisation of 6,500 family lawyers and professionals who believe in a constructive, non-confrontational approach to family law matters.
A leading light on the Law Society Children’s Panel, Lesley has attained specialist accreditation enabling her to represent children and court appointed guardians in public law proceedings.
She represents parents and other family members when local authorities apply for Emergency Protection Orders or Care Orders to remove a child from the care of their parent. She also attends child protection conferences to advise and help parents through the complicated process.
Lesley joins Battens’ experienced family team across the firm’s five offices, dealing with complex issues relating to the family and provides a sympathetic, dependable service.
She added: “I am excited to have joined the excellent family department team at Battens and I am already immersed in the brilliant work carried out to help parents and children.
David Stephens, chairman at Battens, said: “Recruiting a solicitor of Lesley’s quality has allowed us to augment the family team and continue to provide a service of the absolute highest quality to our many clients.”
Lesley can also advise on prenuptial agreements and has advised on high value financial matters involving farms and other businesses as well as those situations where the assets are limited.
In her spare time Lesley enjoys walking and photography – things she combines with her love of travel. In particular, she enjoys taking photographs of wildlife on her regular trips to South Africa.
Battens Solicitors, a Legal 500 firm, has offices in Weymouth, Dorchester, Sherborne, Yeovil and London.
