As Irish and Italian footie fans prepare for their Euro showdown, a Bournemouth ice cream maker is offering them the perfect way to ‘lick’ the opposition.
Luigi ‘Giggi’ Bray – owner of Giggi’s Gelateria, has created ice creams inspired by the two nations’ flags and is selling them from his Bournemouth Food & Drink Festival stand in the town’s main Square.
He explained: “There are two things I am passionate about – football and ice cream – and the Italians do both of these things best.
“Unfortunately, the founder of the food festival, Patrick Marmion is Irish and he does not agree.
“But I have made him an Irish ice cream to sweeten him up when his team loses.”
Giggi is just one of a host of traders at the Bournemouth Food & Drink Festival, which is running from Bournemouth Square until June 26.
His Italian ice cream is a combination of mint bubblegum, milk ice cream and strawberry ice cream.
His ‘Irish’ ice cream is mint, milk and orange sorbet
Patrick Marmion, who founded the annual festival six years ago, said: “If Ireland don’t beat Italy we are out of the Euros, so I’d like to see Giggi eat his words.”
Unsure which ice cream to buy was Yasin Sabih, from the festival’s Appia Sicilian Coffee stall.
She explained: “My dad is Italian and my mum is Irish. So perhaps it will be simpler if I have one of each?”
