A top economist and strategist who provides guidance for billions of pounds’ worth of global investment portfolios is to address a seminar hosted by Hampshire firm HWB Chartered Accountants.
Janet Mui, Head of Market Analysis at wealth manager RBC Brewin Dolphin, is guest speaker at the breakfast briefing which aims to give business leaders first-hand insight into macro-economic trends and prospects for 2024.
The event, at the Axis Conference Centre on the University of Southampton Science Park on Friday 1 March 2024, comes at a pivotal time for the economy after the shocks of high inflation, interest rate rises and market volatility, and in a year when both the UK and the US will see elections.
Janet is an award-winning investment industry commentator and a familiar face in TV interviews about the impact of macroeconomic issues on businesses and individuals.
As a voting member of RBC Brewin Dolphin’s asset allocation committee, she helps determine the investment strategies affecting ‘assets under management’ in portfolios currently worth more than £55 billion.
London-based Janet, who previously spent nearly ten years as lead global economist at investment house Cazenove Capital, said: “The HWB seminar is an ideal chance to dissect what the current macroeconomic picture means for the markets and your money.
“Towards the end of 2023, the Bank of England held rather than raised interest rates in line with inflation slowing at last.
“Investors are now turning their attention to the timing and extent of rate cuts this year.
“Major central banks are expected to cut interest rates together, while regional economic growth may diverge.
“A soft landing in the US economy seems the most likely outcome for now, though there are still plenty of risks to watch out for.
“Meanwhile, government indebtedness places constraints on fiscal policy which will be a hot topic in a year full of elections.
“I am really looking forward to discussing with attendees how investment strategies can be positioned for 2024.”
Michaela Johns, HWB Director, said: “Our free-to-attend investment update seminar is a golden opportunity for business leaders to ask searching questions on the current economic situation to a world-renowned expert.
“Key issues will no doubt include the impact on investment confidence and market expectations of macroeconomic events here and overseas.
“Given the many factors at play internationally, we will focus on hoping for the best while preparing for the worst as we aim to make sense of global developments.”
Janet, a Chartered Financial Analyst with qualifications from Cambridge University, the London School of Economics and Birkbeck College, London, has recently given broadcast interviews for the BBC, Sky News, Bloomberg and CNBC discussing the impact on fuel prices and supply chains of rising tensions in the Red Sea, including the attacks on shipping by Houthi militants.
She has also spoken in the media about the latest US labour market data.
A native speaker in Mandarin and Cantonese, Janet is recognised as an expert on China’s economic growth and influence and has been named a ‘Top Voice’ on UK and global finance issues on LinkedIn.
In 2021, she was named Best Industry Commentator at the City of London Wealth Management Awards.
HWB’s ‘Economist Seminar with Janet Mui’ is at the Axis Conference Centre on the University of Southampton Science Park from 8am to 10am on Friday, 1 March, 2024.
