Congratulations for Liz Truss…and call for action

LIZ IS THE BIZ: Simon Boyd, managing director of REIDsteel, has congratulated Liz Truss on her appointment

Simon Boyd, managing director of John Reid & Sons (Strucsteel) Ltd, has congratulated new Prime Minister Liz Truss and called for greater support for manufacturing businesses and SMEs.

Simon, who is also a member of the CBI’s manufacturing council, said: “Warmest congratulations to Liz Truss on becoming this country’s new Prime Minister.

“She has my full support and I feel certain that she is going make some radical changes which will benefit British businesses and their people.

“Clearly there is absolutely no time to waste in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing businesses, not least the soaring cost of energy where the government will need to intervene without delay.

“Decisive support is urgently needed for businesses, especially small and medium sized firms which are the backbone of country’s economy and are among those most seriously affected by unsustainable rises in energy costs.

“I have been lobbying at the highest level for SMEs and UK manufacturing, particularly for the steel industry, and in my role as a member of the CBI’s manufacturing council and through the Dorset Chamber.

“The Dorset Chamber has been lobbying hard nationally and providing real world cases from the county via the British Chambers of Commerce in order to bring pressure to bear in the corridors of power.

“I also aim to speak to the new business secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg about the urgent support required to revitalise our important manufacturing base for the benefit of the wider economy and UK plc.

“Unfortunately, the Treasury has never backed British manufacturing with the support it has required in recent times and has instead favoured moneyism which has allowed banks to refinance themselves through quantitative easing while manufacturing has been left as the poor relation with very little help in comparison.

“There needs to be a proper funding source which provides access to finance for SMEs so they can adapt to changing conditions, such as energy prices, while taking advantage of Brexit through innovation and investment in new technology and manufacturing techniques to improve productivity and create more highly skilled and highly paid jobs.”
