Familiar faces join steel company

NEW RECRUITS: Keith Grange and Bethan Scotford have joined expanding steel decking company SMD Ltd.

Two new employees have been taken on by Poole-based steel decking firm SMD – although their faces will be familiar to many.

Receptionist Bethan Scotford  has joined after temping with SMD for six weeks through agency TeamJobs.

And Keith Grange is the new permanent Small Works Team Leader after also previously working for the company shaping Britain’s skyline.

Bethan, originally from Basingstoke, counts working in the Hampshire Police control room as one of her previous jobs.

She said: “It is a really interesting role here, being the first person visitors or callers come into contact with at SMD.

“My colleagues have been friendly and welcoming. I couldn’t think of a nicer company for which to work.”

Keith, who lives near Verwood, first worked for SMD in 2008 and has returned to the company after working elsewhere to lead a team of four overseeing the smaller works.

He said: “I’m glad to be back among old friends at SMD, and also especially because the new contract teams set-up makes it an exciting and interesting time.

“This gives us a better understanding of projects, improves communications and enables us to provide an enhanced service for clients.”

SMD, founded in Ringwood in 1987, is one of only a handful of British firms to design, manufacture and install its own steel decking systems.

The company is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and employs more than 100 staff at locations across the UK, including Leeds, Nottingham and Glasgow, as well as having a satellite office in Dubai and a design base in India.

  • Structural Metal Decks (SMD) was founded in 1987 and is based in Poole, Dorset. It designs, manufactures and installs metal decking systems for projects across the world. It employs more than 100 people – some based in India and Dubai. SMD has worked on some of the world’s most iconic buildings, including the Shard and The Olympic Village in London and Manchester’s Etihad Stadium.
