Bus driver Richard Porter has reached the remarkable milestone of 30 years behind the wheel of a Yellow Bus – and he only joined as a temporary job.
During that time Richard has driven half a million miles – that’s the equivalent of driving around the world 20 times.
Richard moved to Bournemouth after 13 years driving in London, and since then has only been late for work twice.
Richard said: “The friends you make is definitely the best part of the job. I also enjoy meeting the public and getting to know different passengers.
“I’ve never had any trouble, and no two days are the same with this job.
“Buses are much easier to drive these days; however, the traffic is a lot worse.
“I started the job on a temporary basis, but since then the years have absolutely flown by.
“I’ve got a few miles left in the tank. I think I’ve got another seven years of driving around Bournemouth, Poole and east Dorset.”
Phil Pannell, service delivery director for Yellow Buses, presented Richard with a certificate and token of the company’s appreciation of his service.
He said “Richard is a highly-valued employee. He is one of our rush men.
“This means that he is relied upon for any job that we need him for. He turns up every day and can be doing anything.
“He is trusted with any and every route, moving buses around, covering for everyone. He has great knowledge.”
