Love was in the air for members of Rotherham Round Table after the fellowship organisation raised more than £2,000 which will be used to help sick children to create special memories.
The black tie Valentine’s Ball, which was held at Sheffield’s Royal Victoria Hotel, saw 147 people enjoy a romantic evening with entertainment provided by magician Greg Holroyd and local band The Magnetics.
Proceeds from the event will be used to support Bournemouth-based Round Table Children’s Wish, a charity which grants hand-crafted wished to children with life-threatening conditions.
The total raised on the evening was in excess of £2,200 and will be used to help the charity to grant more wishes to children in Yorkshire.
Matthew Ridsdale, this year’s Chairman of Rotherham Round Table, said: “Round Table Children’s Wish is a fantastic charity which helps to support children living with life limiting conditions by making dreams come true.
The charity helps to organise special trips, meeting celebrities or simply providing equipment to improve their lives.
“After hearing director Karen Winchcombe speak about the work being undertaken by Round Table Children’s Wish at our National Conference last year, I was touched by some of the some of the truly inspiring and heart-breaking stories of the families the charity has supported.
“I felt there was a golden opportunity to help children in South Yorkshire to access the support offered by the charity.
“We’ve been helping Karen and her team to facilitate stronger links between the charity and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, ensuring children in the local community will benefit directly from our fund-raising event.
“This year is a very special one for Rotherham Round Table. It’s one in which the organisation will celebrate its 90th anniversary and our Valentine’s Ball was the first of a number of special events planned to commemorate this important milestone.”
Karen said: “The charity was borne out of an idea by a group of Round Table members who wanted to raise the money needed to enable a very poorly child to visit Disney. They made the wish come true and continued to fundraise to help more poorly children’s dreams to become a reality.
“Over the past thirty years we have granted many wishes to some amazing children and young people. This year we are working closely with children’s hospices in the North East to offer them a new Scheme of Wishes. Any child currently eligible for hospice care in Yorkshire can be referred for a wish through the hospice. For more information, please do contact us or speak to your local hospice. We want to reach as many eligible children as possible and help make life a little nicer for them.”
“The work of Round Table in support of us is so appreciated – our work is entirely dependent on the hearts and minds of people. They have been superb and the Valentine’s Ball donation is a fantastic amount. As a result of our work with Rotherham Round Table, we’re hoping to help more children to be granted a special wish”.
