The UK’s only Beach Netball event rolled into Bournemouth for a second time and attracted teams and spectators from across the country.
Sixteen teams from as far afield as London took part in the event on Boscombe Beach (July 1st).
The closely contested tournament was eventually won by London-based Team Ghaz (pic attached), who beat local team Ringwood Brewery 12-8 in extra time.
Tournament co-organiser Emma Magson said: “Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, news had spread fast about what fun it had been and we were absolutely thrilled when the event completely sold out by the end of January.”
The event also attracted around 250 spectators of all ages, who enjoyed a glorious sun filled day of exciting netball, children’s games and a barbeque by Urban Reef; with the day raising over double the amount than previous year; £1000, for Dorset Cancer Care Foundation (DCCF).
Emma continued: “A few of the teams and their families who took part this year wore fancy dress, we had pirates and togas; it was great to see such a terrific family atmosphere.”
Beach Netball, a sport already very popular in Australia, sees normal netball rules apply, albeit very loosely due to the game being played on sand.
Players also enjoyed Jimmy’s Iced Coffee, Candy Kittens and drinks from hydration partner iPro Sport. Free massages and treatments were also available from Active Therapy South and teams enjoyed an after-event party hosted by The Lost Paradise venue.
Co-organiser Anna Sharp said: “We are overwhelmed to see the reaction this second year event has received, with teams already asking to reserve their spot for 2018! We also couldn’t be prouder to work with such a fantastic charity which offers financial assistance to Dorset based cancer patients and their families.”
