ON THE RUN: Peter Chandler with the award he received for being first in the Men’s Over-60s category in the South Downs QE Gravel Hill Five trail race
Chartered surveyor Peter Chandler swapped his theodolite for trainers and his suit for shorts as he triumphed in a gruelling five-mile race.
Keen runner Peter took first place in his age group in the South Downs QE Gravel Hill Five trail race in Hampshire.
Peter, a Director of the independent Portsmouth firm Chandler Hawkins Chartered Surveyors, received a trophy for his efforts in the over-60s category.
The 60-year-old veteran finished the course in Queen Elizabeth Country Park, near Petersfield, in a credible 44 mins, 20 secs.
He said he was taking part only because his son Philip, 26, and pal Ben Constable had entered the rural run. Philip finished in 42:58and Ben 39:48.
“I’ve been cross country running with friends for nearly 40 years and thought this looked a fun run,” he added.
Modest Peter said: “I never thought I would win, but I should point out I have only recently qualified as an over-60 and some others were a bit older.
“The run was a bit gruelling at the start, with a steep climb for a mile, but then it was mostly undulating downhill running – and it was a beautiful course in woodland.”
He added: “You can often find me with a hard hat on examining buildings or in the office poring over documents so it is great to get out in the fresh air for a run.”
The course, near South Downs high point Butser Hill, featured 190m of ascent and descent on good quality trails.
Peter, who runs around seven miles a week, mostly on the South Downs, was among 240 runners in the race’s various categories.
