Planting the seeds of success. The Arnewood School’s Gardening Club have created a new garden for the school, which is being entered in this year’s Britain in Bloom contest.
Students at one New Forest school are set to dig deep for victory as they enter a floral competition.
Seven green-fingered enthusiasts from The Arnewood School in New Milton have designed and planted a new garden area that will be entered in the Britain in Bloom competition.
Their new garden for the school will be battling it out in the community category of the competition, where New Milton Town Council was selected as finalists.
Headteacher, Nigel Pressnell, said: “This is the first time we have worked with the Town Council on the Britain in Bloom competition and it has been a great way to engage our students about nature and the environment.
“The students, who are all members of our after school gardening club, have totally taken the lead on this and have come up with wonderful garden design.
“Whatever the result of the competition we will be left with a very new attractive outdoor area for the whole school to enjoy.”
The students, under the guidance of teacher Alice Gardiner, put together an array of design ideas which they pitched to Mr Pressnell and Mark Jeffries, Estates and Facilities Manager for New Milton Town Council.
Their presentations covered different types of plants that could be used in certain environmental conditions as well as ideas for recycling things such as old tyres, wellies and old benches and chairs.
With their chosen designed approved, they are now busy transforming the grass area outside the school’s reception and an area to the side of the sixth form block.
Neighbouring local company, Double H Nurseries, has also donated 200 lavender plants to the project, with other plants still to come.
Judging for Britain in Bloom takes place on July 29.
