A Hampshire accountancy firm is to dedicate its fundraising activities this year to supporting local people living with cancer.

HWB Accountants has announced Wessex Cancer Trust – based yards away in Chandlers Ford – as its charity of 2022.

Events have been lined up throughout the year to benefit the charity, including fundraising, volunteering and raising awareness.

HWB director Michaela Johns said: “We know that every year around 23,000 people are diagnosed with cancer within the Wessex region and that so many families are badly affected by this terrible condition.

“Wessex Cancer Trust’s dedicated team does a huge amount of good work to support anyone affected by cancer, regardless of age, gender or type of cancer, offering support away from the hospital environment.

“The  charity is also particularly local to us, being based just around the corner, so it was an easy decision for us to partner with such a worthy cause for 2022 and our team is keen to get on with fundraising.”

HWB  has a calendar of activities lined up to benefit the Trust through fundraising, volunteering and raising awareness.

HWB Associate Director, James Flood is running the London Marathon in October to support the cause. See www.justgiving.com/fundrasing/hwb-accountants1.

Rachel Billsberry-Grass, Wessex Cancer Trust’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “One in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime. A diagnosis can be a shock and have a huge impact on an entire family. Wessex Cancer Trust provides free and local emotional support to anyone living with cancer.

“Through our four cancer support centres we offer a drop-in service, professional counselling, complementary therapies, activities, support groups and courses at the heart of our communities, as well as providing hospital transport and running choirs.

“We are grateful to HWB for selecting us as its charity of the year and look forward to working closely in partnership with the wonderful team there on a host of activities.”

Wessex Cancer Trust was founded in 1981 and retains its ambition that everyone affected by cancer receives person-centred care that empowers them to live well with and beyond cancer, as well as offering both emotional and physical support and being a trusted source of cancer information.

The trust also has five shops across the Wessex region – in Chandler’s Ford, Hythe, Freshwater, Portchester and Weeke in Winchester – which stock a range of new and pre-loved fashion, bric-a-brac and household items.”

Latest statistics published by the Government show there were  327,174 new cases of cancer diagnosed in England in 2019 and 137,234 people died from cancer in England in 2020.
