Dorset steel firm SMD, which is shaping Britain’s skyline, has scooped a prestigious national award.

The Poole-based steel decking manufacturing and installation firm  scooped a top honour in the Construction Enquirer awards.

SMD, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, was named Best Specialist Contractor to Work With (Under £25m) category.

And the company was also awarded a top 10 spot in the Best Specialist Contractor to Work For (Under £25m) category.

The awards ceremony was held at the Birmingham NEC and hosted by TV’s Amazing Spaces presenter George Clarke.

More than 10,000 votes were cast for favourite companies to work with and do business with by the trade magazine’s subscribers.

SMD Business Development Director Dan Williams: “We were delighted to receive this honour. It is humbling to know that many of the companies with which we work voted for us.

“To be able to say that we have been judged by our peers as the best firm in our category in the country is an outstanding achievement and certainly demonstrates that the care and expertise with which we treat clients is being recognised.”

“It is testament to the loyalty, skill and dedication of our brilliant team at SMD. Their hard work has, as ever, been consistently excellent in delivering the best possible service to all our customers.”

For SMD – one of only a handful of British firms to design, manufacture and install its own steel decking systems – the honour followed 2016’s top 10 spot in the Best Specialist Contractor to Work For (Under £25m) category.

SMD were also named in the top three companies in the Business of the Year category in last year’s Dorset Business Awards.

The company employs more than 100 staff at locations across the UK, including Poole, Leeds, Nottingham and Glasgow.

SMD recently announced an exclusive distribution deal with Angastiniotes Bros Steel Ltd in Cyprus.

SMD’s steel decking has been used in such iconic buildings as the Shard and the Olympic Park in London, Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, Cheltenham racecourse and terminals at Heathrow Airport.

The company, which has a satellite office in Dubai and a design base in India, was founded in Ringwood in 1987 and has carried out more than 200 construction projects locally, including at the RNLI, Poole, Bournemouth Airport and Bournemouth University.
