Tony Berry award is presented

Mo Rauf receives his award from Spencer Berry

Berry Recruitment Group’s Tony Berry Award presented in memory of its late chairman was won by Mohammed Rauf who heads the company’s King’s Cross branch.

Recruitment legend Tony Berry was among the leading businessmen of his generation and his drive and deal-making took him to the chairmanship of a £1bn-valued company.

Tony died in 2022 aged 81 and his beloved wife Marion died last year. The award is presented to the ‘combined top biller’ at Berry Recruitment Group (BRG).

At the business’s conference and award ceremony Mo received the shield from Tony’s son Spencer, the business development director.

The event was held at the exclusive Centurion Golf Club near Hemel Hempstead, not far from the group’s St Albans headquarters.

Spencer said: “As head of the King’s Cross branch, which works across the rail industry, Mo has massively increased volume.

“The branch provides staff to a number of key clients in all manner of roles across the sector, from supervisors to cleaners.

“Mo leads a talented team and he received the award in his 20th year with the company which was fitting.”

Chris Chown, managing director, addressed the staff and said there was room for optimism in the outlook for the year and signalled more investment in technology.

The Berry Recruitment app is being rolled out across the country and is proving its worth in helping customers.

Mo Rauf also collected an ‘achievement of net profit budget’ award for the branch, and an award for being the best ‘temps consultant’.

His colleague Krasi Kirilova was fourth highest temps consultant and Sandy Ngai won an ‘outstanding business support’ star award. The branch also won the ‘most profitable’ and the ‘highest growth’ awards.

In 1981 Tony Berry bought a controlling stake in Blue Arrow, a recruitment business in St Albans.

He grew this company quickly and acquired a number of other businesses including Manpower and Brook Street.

It was launched on the Stock Exchange becoming a FTSE 100 company and developing into the biggest recruitment business in the world. It sponsored Britain’s America’s Cup challenge in the late 1980s.

Tony was once voted ‘best dressed man in the City’ and his generosity and largesse were legendary.

In addition to his business interests Tony was a long-time director of Tottenham Hotspur and was club chairman in 1991-92.

BRG, which Tony founded, has brands including Berry Recruitment, Wild Recruitment, Wild Berry Associates and First Recruitment Services.
