Stamping firm’s name in concrete

Dorset based SMD Ltd is one of the UK’s top names in metal decking, but what is less well known is that the company pours more than 100,000 square metres of concrete every year.

With that figure equating to the size of 400 tennis courts, it’s no wonder award-winning SMD has a contract team dedicated solely to concrete projects operating from its Tower Park, Poole headquarters.

The four strong team is sales manager Scott King, estimator Rosie Sharp, quantity surveyor Max Amey and co-ordinator Will Corsie.

They are augmented by the on-site group of concrete site supervisor Matt Willan Ryan Shilton and Muhammed Karami.

Scott said: “We offer a comprehensive service – a complete one-stop shop for clients to deliver our renowned single source solution on projects and we liaise very closely with our steel decking colleagues.

“The vast majority of our decking contracts require a concrete finish so it makes absolute sense for the same company to be involved in all aspects of a project.”

Scott, who joined SMD last year, added: “Our in-house management structure enables the seamless integration of the concrete works into the overall decking sequence.

“We feel this achieves single point responsibility, increased programme certainty, less administration, reduced co-ordination between work packages and the knowledge that our specialist concreting teams completely understand decking.”

SMD, the company known for shaping Britain’s skyline, formed its stand-alone Concrete Department in 2010 and has now completed more than 150 concrete contracts, including 59 last year alone.

The biggest concrete contract to date is the ARM Building, Cambridge, for Kier Construction where concrete was poured on 15,428m² of R51 decking in a project completed in 2017.

SMD, one of only a handful of British firms to design, manufacture and install its own steel decking systems, also produces ‘best practice’ guidance sheets for potential clients.

Scott added: “These sheets are for the installation of concrete on composite metal decking floor slabs and provide insight and knowledge of undertaking concrete to metal deck.

“The ethos behind this is our continued commitment to drive industry standards higher and be the ‘go to’ place for a whole range of technical knowledge.”

SMD, founded in Ringwood in 1987, celebrated its 30th anniversary last year and employs more than 100 staff at locations across the UK, including Poole, Leeds, Nottingham and Glasgow.

  • Structural Metal Decks (SMD) was founded in 1987 and is based in Poole, Dorset. It designs, manufactures and installs metal decking systems for projects across the world.

It employs more than 100 people – some based in India and Dubai. SMD has worked on some of the world’s most iconic buildings, including the Shard and The Olympic Village in London and Manchester’s Etihad Stadium.
